Spike the photos

While looking at my old photos and sorting them out Spike Milligans nonsense verse came to mind looking at this seascape.

I must go down to the sea again, to the lonely sea and the sky;
I left my shoes and socks there – I wonder if they’re dry?

His most famous poem, “On the Ning Nang Nong”, was voted the UK’s favourite comic poem in 1998 in a nationwide poll. My Ning Nang Nong was in Batticaloa, on the East Coast of Sri Lanka — and this most likely is a young bull but I doubt that’s a distinction that would bother Spike.

On the Ning Nang Nong

On the Ning Nang Nong
Where the Cows go Bong!
and the monkeys all say BOO!
There’s a Nong Nang Ning
Where the trees go Ping!
And the tea pots jibber jabber joo.
On the Nong Ning Nang
All the mice go Clang
And you just can’t catch ’em when they do!
So its Ning Nang Nong
Cows go Bong!
Nong Nang Ning
Trees go ping
Nong Ning Nang
The mice go Clang
What a noisy place to belong
is the Ning Nang Ning Nang Nong!!

Mirror, Mirror

A young spring-tender girl
combed her joyous hair
‘You are very ugly’ said the mirror.
on her lips hung
a smile of dove-secret loveliness,
for only that morning had not
the blind boy said,
‘You are beautiful’?

Down the stream the swans all glide;
It’s quite the cheapest way to ride.
Their legs get wet,
Their tummies wetter:
I think after all
The bus is better.

  1. Hi Chuli, I like the photos being an amateur photographer for many decades. Those poetic words and verses very soothing. Keep it up. Your name recalls me another Chuli, I associated many years back.
