Leaving aside the strategic importance of Elephant Pass , I could never think of Elephant Pass without the image of elephants crossing this isthmus. Scholars will tell me otherwise but both the Sinhala name “Alimankade” and Elephant Pass remains in my mind tied up with lumbering elephants.
The salt lakes nearly dried up, the wind howled a thousand stories I didn’t want to hear, not only of elephants of yonder but of battles fought, lives lost. The haunting beauty of the place lingers on in my mind.

Haunting beauty is the perfect description of Elephant Pass; you picked the perfect day to photograph it. So glad you shared pictures and comments.
The resthouse was definitely standing in 1991 — it was being used by Charlie Company, 6/SR.
great pix. haunting is the word.
Chulie, serene pix, so far from everything that happened here. I remember the spikes just below the pretty aqua water and as you note, the wind, relentless but not cooling. Thanks for sharing.
Chulie, Though I was with you during this photo shoot, I haven’t seen this beauty through my naked eyes which you captured in your lenses.
